TEAM IDEA: UX Concept for an Improved TYPO3 Layout Module

What is my idea about?

by @rakel

The TYPO3 Layout Module is one of the most important editing interfaces in the backend, but its user experience can be improved significantly.

This proposal focuses on a public UX concept for a revised Layout Module, with special attention to spacing, visual hierarchy, arrangement of content elements on pages, and a better concept for the Language Comparison Mode. The work should also incorporate proven interaction patterns from other CMS products.
The goal is not implementation, but a strong and publicly available UX foundation for later development in TYPO3 v15.

What must be achieve by 31st of August 2026?

By 31 August 2026, this project will deliver:

  • a UX review of the current Layout Module
  • prioritized editor use cases and pain points
  • wireframes and a clickable prototype for key flows
  • a concept for improving the Language Comparison Mode
  • UX considerations for multilingual editing on smaller screens and mobile-sized viewports
  • public documentation as hand-off for later implementation

All results will be publicly available for the TYPO3 community.

What is the potential impact of your idea for the overall goal?

This work will help make TYPO3 easier and clearer for editors, especially when working with complex pages and multilingual content.
It will provide a shared UX direction for future implementation work and contribute to a more modern, consistent, and user-friendly backend experience.

What skills are needed to work on the idea?

The full budget will be used for UX design and concept work by Laura Heine (B13) who already took care of the UX design of the V14 (TYPO3 14 backend redesign: b13’s UX vision and roadmap). Programming and implementation are not part of this proposal and will need separate funding.

How does your Idea align with the strategic goals for TYPO3 v14.

This proposal is aligned with TYPO3’s Product Strategy and intended to support TYPO3 v15.

More specifically, it contributes to:

  • Reducing Complexity by improving structure, hierarchy, and usability in one of TYPO3’s central editing interfaces
  • Enabling Better Content by improving editorial workflows and multilingual content handling
  • Improve Customer-Oriented Communication by contributing to a more intuitive and user-friendly backend experience for editors and content teams

By creating a public UX foundation for one of TYPO3’s most important backend modules, this work supports future product and implementation decisions in a practical way.

Budget for this idea?
