[SOLVED] New to TYPO3 – Looking for Guidance and Resources

Hi everyone,

My name is Léa, and I’m excited to join this community! I’m currently a Web Design and Integration student from Quebec, Canada. For my final semester, I’m working on a research project about a topic of my choice, and I’ve decided to focus on TYPO3, as it’s the CMS used at my upcoming internship.

At the internship, they specifically use TYPO3 version 12. While they don’t do development with TYPO3, their work revolves around integration and the creation of new content.

Even though my main tasks will focus on integration and content creation, I’d like to gain some understanding of the development side of TYPO3 as well.

I’m currently in the process of gathering sources and planning my research for the next six weeks. My initial idea is to thoroughly review the Documentation Guides/Tutorials for TYPO3 v12.4 as a starting point. However, I’d love to know if this is the right approach or if there’s a better way to go about it.

Here are a few specific questions that I’d appreciate guidance on:

  1. Would it be problematic if I used tutorials or videos based on TYPO3 v11 or v13, given that I’ll be working with v12?

  2. Are there any valuable resources outside of typo3.org that you’d recommend?

  3. I noticed TYPO3 has some podcasts on YouTube—are they helpful for someone at my level?

Thank you in advance for your help and for welcoming me into this community. I’m eager to learn and contribute!

Best regards,

Léa

Hi Lea,

welcome to the TYPO3 community! I try to answer your questions:

  1. Of course there are differences between major TYPO3 versions like 11, 12 or 13. But everything that was written for TYPO3 11 should be also valid for TYPO3 12. Since you wrote that you’re less into development v13 tutorials won’t suit you much.

  2. There is a TYPO3 Guidebook available as printed book or eBook. Although it was written for TYPO3 v10 it is still valid and should give you a compact overview about the TYPO3 community, it’s ecosystem and basic concepts of TYPO3.

  3. The podcasts are a great way to getting know more about the TYPO3 project in general because they are less technical. Specifically I’d recommend the episode with Patrick Gaumond. Maybe you know him already since he is also from Quebec. You can find him also on Linkedin.

If you want to get in touch more with the community, I’d suggest to join TYPO3 Slack. You need a my.typo3.org account to get an invite to Slack.

I hope this helps a little bit. Feel free to come back and ask more questions!

Have fun with TYPO3 and our great community!

Cheers
Peter

Hi Lea, Welcome to the TYPO3 Community, as Peter answerd a lot of the question already i focus on “suggested” study order as TYPO3 is a complex system and it does not make sense to Features or Deprecate old features.

start with the Getting Started Tutorial, as they are designed to give you an System Overview…
https://docs.typo3.org/m/typo3/tutorial-getting-started/12.4/en-us/Index.html

afterwards i would suggest learing about Typoscript and Fluid to get an idea on how the Content Rendering in TYPO3 works.

https://docs.typo3.org/m/typo3/reference-typoscript/12.4/en-us/Index.html#start

https://docs.typo3.org/m/typo3/reference-coreapi/12.4/en-us/ApiOverview/Fluid/Introduction.html

afterwards you can look into Extension Development.

Hi @heyliya!

Since you are from Quebec, I can also recommend that you contact Patrick Gaumond and Philippe Fekete. Both are active community members in Quebec (Quebec City, to be exact).

You’ll find them on TYPO3 Slack.
