Low-code/No-code GovStack Workflow Building Block integration

By Daniel Homorodean

What is your idea about?

TYPO3 is an optimal solution for the public administration and governments all over the world. TYPO3 is well suited to provide information about the public services and allow citizens to access a catalog of e-services.
Still, TYPO3 does not have an advanced low-code process management component that would allow the e-services to be modeled and instantiated. Luckily, there are good open source tools that can be integrated with TYPO3 in order to provide a fully integrated e-service platform that can be used in Government 2 Citizens and Government 2 Business context ( e-service portals), or Government 2 Government ( intranets etc). Such integration will speed up the adoption of TYPO3 as the standard solution for governments and will strengthen the positioning of TYPO3 in the relationships with development cooperation and international institutions partners that support the adoption of good governance through the usage of open source technologies.
We propose to integrate TYPO3 with Camunda ( https://camunda.com/ ) and Joget ( https://www.joget.org/ ). These two platforms were benchmarked and validated by the GovStack Global project ( https://www.govstack.global/ ) and are already implemented with the support of major development cooperation organizations in different countries.
The integration can further be useful for any implementation case of business process automation for organizations, including corporations and large NGOs.
Through the integration, TYPO3 will be able to completely provide the user layer including the initiation of e-service request (by end-user, citizen, business or government agency), review of data and decision making, visualisation of process results, and notifications.
This integration responds perfectly to the “Strategic Goal 7 — Improve Interconnectivity” from the current TYPO3 CMS Product Strategy

What do you want to achieve by the end of Q2 2025?

  1. Start a process instance in either Camunda or Joget by using a TYPO3 website to collect the user data specific to the process initiation, event triggered by an anonymous or logged frontend user by submitting a form
  2. Leverage TYPO3 to collect additional data required at various stages of the process workflow defined in Camunda or Joget, enabling TYPO3 to serve as the primary user interface for website participants throughout the workflow.
  3. Provide a unified and consistent interface for process workflow in the TYPO3 website, enabling logged-in frontend users with special privileges (““public servant””) to efficiently review and manage process instances and their associated data. This interface will integrate with workflows defined and executed in Camunda or Joget, presenting process instances through structured lists and facilitating interaction via forms and predefined actions.
  4. Create a unified and consistent interface within the TYPO3 website that enables logged-in frontend users (““citizens””) to access, view, and download (when available) the status and outcomes of their relevant process instances.
  5. Develop a Manual for using the integration

What is the potential impact of your idea for the overall goal?
Integrating TYPO3 with Camunda and Joget offers significant benefits for organizations that need to combine a powerful content management system (CMS) with a robust business process management (BPM) engine. As a frontend for these open-source BPM platforms, TYPO3 can enable the development of high-value solutions, including TYPO3-based e-government systems and workflow automation for businesses and NGOs.
By integrating TYPO3 with Camunda and Joget BPM engine, TYPO3 extends beyond content management, allowing it to support workflow automation, process management, and decision automation. The benefits of this integration will be:

  • TYPO3 positions itself as a versatile, process-enabled CMS, increasing its adoption in corporate and public sectors globally;
  • TYPO3 integrates more easily into enterprise IT ecosystems, making it a preferred CMS for large organizations
  • TYPO3 is positioned as an ideal CMS for e-government and enterprise process automation, making it a comprehensive solution for e-administration and in relation with the development cooperation international actors. Furthermore, TYPO3 will be more tightly integrated with the GovStack Global project, which is promoted globally by the German International Development Cooperation agency GIZ and the International Telecommunications Union ITU
  • TYPO3 becomes a preferred choice for BPM-enabled content management, increasing its market relevance

Implementing this idea will require substantial work, including:

  • In-depth research of Camunda and Joget and learning the two platforms
  • Technical implementation
  • User manual

The implementation will likely cost more than 10.000 Euro . Arxia will support the difference.

Which budget do you need for your idea?
10.000 Euro

By the way, as DFAU we have a Camunda TYPO3 integration already for v12 that could be used as kickstart.

That’s great @tmaroschik , especially if it is Camunda 8 (8.3 or newer), since the changes from the previous versions are substantial. I’m looking forward to collaborating, if that’s acceptable for DFAU also.

It’s still for Camunda 7, but the general patterns and our findings should be still applicable. Count us in for some conceptual help.
